The Kristina Brahe was built to be a military vessel in Chicago, USA, in 1943. She was known to have crossed the Atlantic Ocean once during the war, sailing as the HMS Kilchernan under the United States flag as a submarine destroyer. In 1948 the ship was sold to Norway and rebuilt to become a passenger ferry. The last reconstruction was completed in spring 2008. Today the Kristina Brahe cruises the “Czars’ Route,” going through Lake Saimaa, the Saimaa Canal, the Gulf of Finland, and the Archipelago Sea. Passengers can enjoy the Finnish inland waters and the Archipelago until the end of August, though the cruise season continues until September.
