This Akademik Shuleykin-class oceanographic research vessel has two names and two personalities. As the Professor Khromov, she carries researchers into polar waters to collect important data. As the Spirit of Enderby (official name), she carries globetrotters into those same waters to get a better understanding of the world around them. This ship, originally built in Finland for the Soviets in 1983, was fully refurbished in 2009 to provide comfortable twin-share eco-tourist accommodations (half of which have private facilities). The vessel, manned by seasoned Russian sailors, features full ice-resistance and a 1,560-horsepower engine capable of 12 knots. It can get in close to shores and provide captivating views of mesmerizing landscapes. The galley includes top New Zealand and Australian chefs, who provide a touch of culinary class to remote expeditions. A combination bar and library lounge, as well as a dedicated lecture room, provide comfortable venues for those aboard to learn from naturalists and guides sailing with them.
