Sights explored

Moscow: Tretiakov Gallery
The Tretyakov State Art Gallery is the best art gallery in the city. The foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world, this public exhibition opened in 1856 when textile trader and merchant banker Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, deciding that Russia needed a national art gallery, contributed his personal collection to the cause. It took 25 years of collecting and contributing for his unofficial city gallery to become popular. By 1893, the collection was moved into its current location and became the “Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov City Art Gallery.”
Moscow: Novodevichiy Convent
Novodevichiy Convent is one of the oldest monasteries in Moscow. It was unofficial center of the opposition to the Romanov's family, and remained virtually intact since 17th century. Beyond the five-golden-domed structure, housing the Our Lady of Smolensk icon, the central point of the original convent, there are a number of churches on the grounds: Transfiguration, Holy Virgin, St. Amvrosi, and the Refectory. Novodevichiy Covent was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Sight in 2004.
Moscow: The Kremlin

The heart of Moscow, the Kremlin, is located on the bustling Red Square. The Kremlin is the most recognizable symbol of Moscow. This ancient citadel constructed in 1147 was originally an outpost to fend off the barbaric Mongol hordes. Moscow has since grown beyond the original walls, but the Kremlin has remained a representation of political power in Russia. Russian Emperors, Soviet rulers, and Russian contemporary leaders alike used the Kremlin for official ceremonies and added their own personal touches by constructing new buildings, museums, churches, and galleries. Its rooms tell the stories of the Russian dynasties and rulers of the past 400 years. Today the Kremlin of Moscow is a well-preserved UNESCO treasure that will give you chills as you traverse the same halls that once held Ivan the Terrible, Napoleon, Lenin, and Stalin.

Uglich
Located on the banks of the Volga River, Uglich presented itself as a perfect fortress of defense for the ancient Moscovy Kingdom. In 1591 the 10-year old prince Dmitry of the ancient Ruyrik dynasty was murdered here by Boris Godunov before Godunov claimed the throne of Russia and was murdered himself. These events plunged Russia into three decades of political turmoil known as the Time of Trouble, leaving the lands devastated and open for a new dynasty: the Romanovs. We will visit the small but historically significant church of St. Dmitry-on-Blood, which stands on the location of the young prince's murder.
Goritsy
The town of Goritsy is home to the historic Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, built in 1397. During the Time of Trouble, Polish invaders stormed the monastery in an attempt to purge Russia of its remaining nobles. Unsuccessful, they were forced out by the renewed Russian forces.
Kizhi Island
Kizhi Island on Lake Onega is home to the massive Transfiguration Church. With 22 domes that extend over this small yet picturesque island, there are two interesting facts that surround it. Despite all of its architectural wonders, not a single nail was used to build it. Also, its original location was on the mainland, closer to the people. The Bolsheviks, for all their hatred of religion, wanted to destroy the church, but did not dare to do so. They decided to transport the church to a deserted island where no one would be able to see it. Today it can only be reached by river cruise.
Mandrogi
Mandrogi is a small village that has no architectural wonders, gigantic castles or impressive churches. These lands and people seem to be immune to the flow of time. You will stop in the village for a traditional Russian picnic with the meal called "shashlik."
St. Isaac's Cathedral
St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe. Because of its rich decorations, gigantic golden cupolas, and sprawling observation deck, it is one of the most popular tourist sites in St. Petersburg.
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood was built to commemorate one of Russia's greatest emperors. Alexander II is most famous for liberating the Russian serfs two years before the abolition of slavery in the U.S. After he was assassinated, the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood was erected in his honor.
St. Petersburg: Peter and Paul Fortress
Peter and Paul Fortress was designed to defend the city from naval attacks, but was used as a political prison for dissidents of the tsarist regime and as a museum during the soviet era. The fortress now stands as the tomb for the Russian imperial family.
The Hermitage Museum
The Hermitage Museum is to St. Petersburg what the Kremlin is to Moscow. Located in the gorgeous Winter Palace, it sits in the very heart of the city, a palace so beautiful that not even the Bolsheviks could destroy it during their takeover in 1917. It holds one of the best collections of art in the world, boasting works of such rarity that you will leave hypnotized by beauty. This collection is located in the ancient home of Russia’s emperors, the very place where they rose to power and ruled one-fifth of the world's territories. They say that if you were to spend three minutes by each of the exhibits in the Hermitage, it would take you three years to see all the works.
St. Petersburg: Catherine's Palace
Located in Tsarksoye Selo (Royal Village), Catherine's Palace was a gift from Peter the Great to his wife Catherine I. The Palace is a striking example of baroque architecture with its gorgeous interiors that are more than spectacular. The so-called Golden Enfilade of state rooms, designed by Rastrelli, is particularly renowned and forms the focus of the palace tour. Catherine's Palace is famous for its Amber Room which was looted during World War II by the Germans during their 300 day siege of St. Petersburg, so that it took more than 50 years to reconstruct the legendary room.

Interesting facts:
* In Elizabeth's reign it took over 100 kg of gold to decorate the palace exteriors.
* Tsarskoye Selo is also associated with Russia's greatest poet Alexander Pushkin, who studied in the town's Lyceum from 1811 to 1817.
St. Petersburg: Peterhof
Peterhof Palace, the summer residence of Russia's royalty, is located on the outskirts of St. Petersburg to visit . Stroll in the vast Lower Park with 176 glorious fountains of various forms and styles, numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes, including the famous Samson Fountain. Visit magnificent, beige and white Grand Summer Palace, lavishly decorated with the two white pavilions with gilded cupolas. While walking through its lavish parks and elegant rooms, be careful not to forget that you haven't been transported to "the Russian Versailles".
